A graduate certificate is a credential earned after completing a short specialized program focused on a specific subject or skill. Earning a graduate certificate usually costs less than a master’s degree, and it also doesn’t take as long to complete.

Typically offered by colleges and universities, graduate certificates can be useful for gaining additional knowledge or beneficial training that could potentially lead to career advancement—or as a pathway to career change.

Learn what a graduate certificate program entails, the key differences between a graduate certificate and a master’s degree, and the benefits of earning the credential.

What is a graduate certificate?

A graduate certificate is not a graduate degree but rather a graduate-level vocational program. Graduate certificates offer specialized training through a short, intensive program with the aim of preparing students for work in a specific area in the public or private sector.

Students may earn graduate certificates in the following subjects:

  • Change management

  • Educational studies

  • Accounting

  • Project management

  • International relations

  • Filmmaking

  • Computer software and database development

  • Health and society

  • Behavioral science

  • Information systems security

  • Data science and AI

  • Corporate finance

  • Environment

  • Web design

Program length and cost

Graduate certificates typically require completing three to four courses or between 12 and 17 credit hours, depending on your program. Students can complete the average program in less than one year or one to two full-time semesters.

The cost of a certificate program depends on the school and the student’s status as an international student or domestic student. Programs range from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Some schools charge a flat rate, while others charge per credit hour.

Format

Depending on the school, you may complete courses entirely in person or online or through a mix of online and in-person courses. Some schools also provide distance learning opportunities.

Because graduate certificate programs are short in duration and complement other degrees, the curriculum of most programs consists of only specialized courses. For example, a graduate certificate in computer animation will likely include a few semesters of video and animation courses and related content. Some programs may require group projects or allow for a choice of complementary courses in a specific area of study.

Graduate certificate vs. master’s degree

In Canada, graduate certificate courses can contribute toward a graduate degree, but they don't automatically lead to one. A graduate certificate or graduate diploma is a standalone qualification, often shorter than a full degree and more specialized.

However, you may be able to apply the credits you earn toward a master’s if you choose to pursue an advanced degree.

Consider some of the key differences between a graduate certificate and a master’s degree:

Graduate certificateMaster’s degree

ThesisNoYes
Length of time6-12 months of full-time study2-3 years of full-time study
Average cost$3,600 CAD in Ontario [1]$7,662 CAD for Canadian citizens [2]

Application process

Applying to a graduate certificate program is much less involved than a master’s program. Each school will outline its specific prerequisites, but most expect a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, as part of the application process, expect to complete the online application and provide documents such as proof of English language proficiency, academic transcripts, academic references, a CV, and a cover letter of intent.

Applying to a master’s degree program can often mean taking an entrance exam—such as the GRE or GMAT or earning an undergraduate degree first, in addition to an application, letters of reference, English proficiency test scores, transcripts, and more.

Financial aid

Financial aid options vary widely by program and location, so it’s important to review financial aid options in your program. For example, non-degree, certificate students who attend an Ontario-based program may be eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Full-time students may apply for OSAP aid if they meet other eligibility requirements. Other schools, however, may not offer student loan funding or grants of any kind for graduate certificate programs.

You may find scholarships or grants to help pay for your graduate certificate. If you work full-time, ask if your employer will cover a portion of your education.

Reasons for getting a graduate certificate

People earn graduate certificates for many reasons. Some choose this type of education to advance their career, while others do so for personal development.

1. Develop career skills.

A graduate certificate can be an excellent way to gain specific skills needed to advance in a current career or industry. For example, the tech world changes quickly, and it might be necessary to update an area of knowledge in order to move into more senior roles. Because graduate certificate programs concentrate on specific subjects and skills development, they can be very specific to your needs.

2. Change your career.

Graduate certificates are also useful for changing careers. Rather than going back to school to earn a second bachelor’s degree or enrolling in a lengthy master’s program, earn a graduate certificate faster in order to make a career transition. Working full-time while completing a graduate certificate program is easier since there isn’t as much coursework to complete.

3. Study something that interests you.

Sometimes, learning something new can be a worthwhile personal endeavor. You can gain valuable personal insights, strengthen existing skills, develop new ones, or learn about a subject of interest.

4. Build your professional network.

Most people earning graduate certificates are also working professionals in similar fields, making earning a graduate certificate an excellent opportunity to learn from others in a subject or field—and even gain a mentor. Meeting new peers and expanding your network may also be helpful in finding a new job or furthering a career.

How to choose the best graduate certificate

When deciding which graduate certificate to pursue, use these steps as guidance.

1. Research relevant subjects.

Find out which schools offer programs that focus on subjects of interest that relate to your career goals. Graduate certificates are usually specialized because they focus on a niche approach to a subject. To get a sense of what’s available, search for “graduate certificate” and then the subject or skill you hope to study, such as “business writing” or “artificial intelligence.”

2. Decide on the best program format.

Consider whether studying online or in person is best. Note that not every program will offer a choice, so pick the program that best meets your learning needs. In-person classes offer more structure while online classes offer greater flexibility.

3. Understand what you can afford.

Price is an important factor. Take note of tuition costs to determine whether each program falls within budget. With cost in mind, review each program's required and elective coursework to ensure it aligns with individual educational goals.
