Generative AI tools such as Adobe Firefly are becoming widely used among creative professionals and hobbyists who use them to streamline their workflows and explore new creative possibilities. According to Salesforce, 45 percent of Americans now use generative AI [1], and industry experts expect this number to continue growing as generative AI becomes part of everyday creative work. Adobe Firefly stands out among generative AI tools for its ability to turn simple prompts into images, videos, and more, making it a flexible option for creating artwork, videos, social media assets, and other creative content.

Learn more about what Adobe Firefly offers, how people are using it, and how you can start using it in your own projects.

What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is a generative AI tool developed by Adobe to support creative work through image generation, text effects, and video editing. You can use Firefly through a standalone web application, or you can find it built into Adobe products, including Adobe Express, Illustrator, and Photoshop. It's designed to be beginner-friendly while offering enough flexibility for experienced designers.

How does Adobe Firefly differ from other AI image generators?

One reason people choose Adobe Firefly over other generative AI tools is its training data, which includes Adobe stock images, openly licensed images, and public domain images with expired copyrights. This training helps prevent legal problems related to content creation and ensures safe commercial use of Adobe Firefly images.

Adobe Firefly also provides a handy sidebar that allows you to toggle between design elements quickly and easily and turn them on and off if needed. You can work directly from the Adobe Firefly app or find its features within other Adobe products like Adobe Express, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro.

Key features of Adobe Firefly

Adobe Firefly gives you powerful tools to turn ideas into images, videos, and audio just by describing them. Whether you want to generate artwork from a scene, fill or expand an image, or add motion and effects to a video, Firefly's features are designed to make the process intuitive and inspiring. Take a closer look at what you can do with these tools.

Image features

Firefly's text-to-image feature creates an image based on a verbal or written description. Adding detail to your description helps you get exactly the image you want, so it's important to consider elements like:

  • Color

  • Mood

  • Themes

  • Art styles or movements

Firefly's scene-to-image feature allows you to generate a scene by placing premade shapes on a virtual canvas. The scene-to-image generator then creates images from the premade shapes, which you can edit to your liking.

Firefly's Generative Fill feature allows you to brush over an area on an image, which creates a blank space for you to fill with something else. After you've described what you would like to put in the space, AI delivers multiple options based on your description. You can select one of these or describe something new.

Firefly's Generative Expand feature allows you to make your canvas larger. From here, you can move certain elements, add new elements and details, or replace them.

Video/audio features

Firefly's text-to-video and image-to-video features allow you to create 2D or 3D videos from a description or image. You can then add details like flames, smoke, water, and more, and adjust elements of your video like motion, camera angle, or aspect ratio.

Firefly's video and audio translation allows you to communicate your message in over 20 different languages. The software even senses tone, cadence, and other voice aspects for a natural-sounding message similar to that of a native speaker.

Can I use Adobe Firefly for free?

Adobe Firefly does offer a free plan (essentially a product trial) along with three paid plan options. Each plan provides you with generative credits that you can use to create images, video, and audio. The four plans include:

  • Free Firefly Plan: First-time users get 25 free generative credits, which expire within one month if unused.

  • Standard Firefly Plan: For a monthly price of $9.99, you receive 2,000 generative credits.

  • Pro Firefly Plan: For a monthly price of $29.99, you receive 7,000 generative credits.

  • Premium Firefly Plan: For a monthly price of $199.99, you receive 50,000 generative credits [2].

Use cases of Adobe Firefly

You may find it easier to understand the benefits of generative AI when you have an idea of how you can use it. The following use cases for Adobe Firefly show how you can increase engagement among your audience, ensure brand consistency, spark new interest in your brand, and boost your creativity.

Design a virtual avatar to increase engagement on your social media platform.

Social media users notice fun and creative images. Creating a unique avatar with Firefly's AI character generator can help your profile stand out in crowded feeds, encourage likes and shares, and make your brand or personal profile more memorable. You can fine-tune the avatar using Generative Fill.

Develop a cohesive brand image by using Firefly's Style Kit feature.

Firefly's Style Kit is a feature that lets you select and save style settings to keep elements of your brand consistent, such as color, font, graphics, and more. Brand consistency helps build trust, spread awareness, and drive sales.

Launch a new business, product, or service with a short teaser video.

You can create a short video clip (or teaser) from a text description in Adobe Firefly. A teaser video prepares your target audience for your new business, product, or service by providing a glimpse into what you're offering, and it can inspire viewers to spread the word about what they've seen.

Use generative AI to enhance your already-creative process.

Generative AI can help even the most creative person transform ideas into art. It can give you a boost if you're experiencing a creative block and help you generate new ideas quickly if you're crunched for time. It also acts like a creative assistant by collaborating with you to come up with a satisfying end product.

How to start using Adobe Firefly

You can start using Adobe Firefly in your web browser by creating an Adobe account and signing in. Once you're in, follow these steps to explore its features and begin creating:

  1. Explore available features: Find out which features might help boost your creative projects, such as text-to-image, Generative Fill, image-to-video, and more.

Tips for creating effective prompts

The quality of the content you generate with Adobe Firefly has everything to do with the effectiveness of your prompts. To make your practice with Adobe Firefly more productive, consider these tips for creating effective prompts:

Use specific and detailed language for better interaction with the Firefly model.

Detailed prompts give Firefly more to work with, helping you generate accurate and visually rich results. Instead of a general description, add concrete subjects and adjectives.

For example:

  • Scruffy, sad dog lying in a dirty alley

  • Sparkling stream running through a lush forest

  • Old gray-haired lady doing dishes in a small, tidy kitchen

Include unique elements in your prompt to receive a more powerful image.

Once you've outlined the basic subject of your prompt, consider adding layers that shape the mood, setting, or artistic feel. Elements like emotion, lighting, and style can help Adobe Firefly generate images that are not only accurate but also more expressive and visually engaging.

For example:

  • Emotion: Mother holding her baby tenderly

  • Lighting: Melting popsicle on a bright, sunny day

  • Style: Bowl of fruit in the artistic style of Frida Kahlo

Refine your language to improve prompt results.

If your first image isn't quite what you imagined, try adjusting your prompt by adding more detail. The more clearly you describe the scene, the better Firefly can match your vision. For example, if you're generating an image of a man on a bicycle, think about details like:

  • How old is he?

  • What is his mood or expression?

  • What is he wearing?

  • Is he racing or riding casually?

  • Is the bicycle new or worn?

  • What color is it?

  • What is the setting—sunny day, rainy street, mountain trail?
